Lisbon, part VIII - the Igreja de Sao Roque and Igreja do Carmo

The graffiti here really was something

Last day in Lisbon. Igreja de Sao Roque and Igreja do Carmo were in the cards, both a ten minute walk from my hostel, so I nipped over to see them in the morning.

The square upon which they were located.

Went off to get my lunch. My last lunch in Lisbon.

Took a tram down to the metro station, and hark at the graffiti.

Inside the metro station. Is this supposed to be a nod to the 2016 Rio Games that just wrapped up?

Back in the airport again, then.

Waiting, as I always do.

And it's up and away - to the Netherlands; to Eindhoven.

Lisbon, part VII - More miradouros; Lisbon Cathedral

I spent the rest of the day wandering around the city as I do. This is going to be all photos again because I don't really have much to say. I went to loads of miradouros and took plenty of pictures.

Lisbon, for me, was an antithesis of Barcelona - the city was amazingly beautiful but the people I met there were meh, not memorable at all. I think I did meet a couple but didn't really gel with them. Barcelona on the other hand.. well, you know all about Barcelona. I was underwhelemed by the city, severely so, but the people, well, I fell in love with them.

Alors, I whisper again: this is how I like my Europe, my Lisboa.

The city square

And the Castelo as seen from one of the city miradouros.

A closeup of the Castelo.

Lisbon Cathedral.

And the best closeup I could get of the Cathedral.

This was taken from the miradouro right outside my hostel. Dusky Lisbon.

Lisbon, part VI - Castelo de Sao Jorge

Castelo de Sao Jorge was on the cards today - well, I was only in Lisbon for about three days anyway.

The Castelo can trace its earliest roots back to 6th century BC, but as far as I can tell the main structure today was built by the Moors in the 10th century, and named after St George, the Sao Jorge who killed the dragon. There are some rather unusual legends surrounding the patron saint and the idea of the devil, but since this isn't a dissertation I'll leave the finer print to google and wikipedia. (The consensus is that no one does libraries and bookstores, let alone second hand book shoppes, any more.)

This is how I like Lisbon - its cobbled, sloping streets, pastel-coloured houses and blue skies.

Off to catch another tram

Another miradouro.

And the entrance to the Castelo.

They used these to shoot arrows.

A medieval well.

See how different the photo looks when the skies are cloudy?

The panorama from this particular miradouro is somewhat less impressive

This was a cat that followed me all around the Castelo. I think it rather liked me.
